The Fragrances and Flavours Association of India (FAFAI) proudly introduced the first edition of the Indian Fragrances and Flavours Reference List of Ingredients in the year 2020, a landmark publication envisioned to become a standard reference document for the industry.

This comprehensive compilation represents a major milestone for the Indian fragrance and flavour sector, bringing together more than 9,000 ingredients that are widely used across the industry. The initiative reflects FAFAI’s continued commitment toward transparency, industry standardization, and strengthening India’s position in the global fragrance and flavour landscape.

A Step Towards Transparency and Industry Standardization

The reference list highlights a diverse range of ingredients used within the industry. A significant portion of these ingredients is derived from natural plant extracts via sustainable practices, while the remainder consists of aroma chemicals and synthetic compounds that play a vital role in modern fragrance and flavour creation.

The publication has been carefully curated to showcase ingredients that are generally considered safe, especially at a time when consumers are becoming increasingly conscious about the products they use and consume. This initiative has been developed with a strong focus on enhancing transparency, improving clarity, and creating a reliable framework that can be followed by stakeholders across the industry.

Supporting the Vision of ‘Make in India’

Speaking about the achievement, FAFAI’s then President Rishabh C. Kothari (year 2020), emphasized that the publication aligns closely with the Government of India’s vision of “Make in India” and the growing movement of “Vocal for Local.”

He shared that this first-of-its-kind compilation is a significant step toward promoting the Indian fragrance and flavour industry while encouraging greater awareness and confidence among consumers and businesses alike.

FAFAI further highlighted that the initiative reflects the collective dedication and contribution of the industry, making it a true collaborative effort aimed at strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem.

Industry Collaboration and Institutional Support

FAFAI also acknowledged the valuable guidance and support received from key institutions and industry leaders during the development of this publication.

Special appreciation was extended to Dr. Ram Vishwakarma, Chairman of PCD 18 at the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Government of India, for his inspiration and direction throughout the process.

The association also recognized the contribution of Shakti Vinay Shukla and the entire team at the Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre (FFDC), Government of India, for partnering with FAFAI in bringing this ambitious initiative to life.

Recognition from the Government of India

The initiative also received appreciation from Shri Nitin Gadkari, honorable minister for Road Transport and Highways and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

He commended FAFAI for its continuous efforts in supporting the “Make in India” mission and expressed confidence that the publication would not only promote local manufacturing but also evolve into a globally recognized standard reference document for the fragrance and flavour industry.

A Landmark Moment for India’s Fragrance & Flavour Industry

With the launch of this reference list, FAFAI has taken a pioneering step toward creating greater industry transparency, encouraging responsible manufacturing practices, and positioning India as a credible and trusted contributor in the global fragrance and flavour market.

As the industry continues to evolve, this publication is expected to serve as a foundational resource for manufacturers, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders across the value chain.
